Mysterious story, but anyways a nice marketing stunt. The ingredients of such are simple, but powerful: claim about participation of a VIP, wait till prominent officially denies, and you’ve saved money for a huge ad campaign.

The crucial part is to let the prominent deny — in case of Spears it worked perfectly.
